Coming into Illinois 8A championship game, Maine South quarterback Charlie Gordo was known for winning games with his strong right arm. However, it was the Vanderbilt-bound QB's legs that carried the Hawks (14-0) to a 41-21 win over Hinsdale Central (11-3). Gordo, who entered the game with over 3,000 yards passing and 37 touchdowns, carried the ball 25 times for an 8A title game record 164 yards and a touchdown. HC held Gordo to just 132 yards and one touchdown on 9-of-14 completions. Click here for game story.
Illinois' winningest high school football team captured its 740th win and seventh state championship all in one game. East St. Louis beat Geneva 33-14 in the 7A championship game in Champaign. The victory capped a great season for the Flyers who lost their opening game in the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Series and then reeled-off 13 straight victories. Click here for game story.
For the second straight year Lemont came-up short in the Illinois 6A title game. Saturday Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin beat Lemont 37-15 to hand the Cyclones their second straight runner-up finish. In 2007, Lemont lost to Joliet Catholic. Click here for game story.
A team that won just three games over the previous two season captured the 5A Illinois high school football state championship on Saturday. A couple years ago Carthage high school gave-up a little bit of its identity when it merged with two other high school districts, but the football tradition is still intact. Friday Illini West beat DuQuoin 21-14 to win the 3A state title. Carthage won state titles in 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Click here for game story.
When the post-season began last month, nobody gave 15th seeded Immaculate Conception a chance to claim the Illinois 2A state championship. When the clock moved to 0:00 on Friday, nobody was doubting the Cinderella Run anymore as the Knights beat Casey-Westfield 36-17. Immaculate Conception began the run after a 5-4 regular season. The Knights are the first team to ever win an Illinois title with four losses. Click here for game story.

Geneva became the first Illinois school to punch its ticket to the state football championships next week in Champaign. Friday night Geneva behind three second-half touchdowns from Michael Ratay beat Crystal Lake South 25-21 to earn at berth in the 7A championship game. Four weeks into the season the Mt. Carmel Caravan had been through quite a few highs and lows. After wins over Curie and St. Ignatius, MC found itself nationally-ranked by several polls. That lofty feeling came to a crashing halt in Week 3 with a three-point loss to Providence and was followed-up with a loss to St. Rita the next week.
At 2-2, the team did a gut check and now the Caravan is just two wins away from another state title after a 42-7 win over Marist Friday night in the Illinois 8A quarterfinals. Click here for a game story.

24 of the 25 teams in last week's National Prep Poll won, and that means there's stability in the latest rankings. #17 St. Ignatius' (Cleveland, OH) win over former #13 Glenville (Cleveland, OH) drops Glenville out of the poll and allows St. Ignatius to take over #13. The teams between#18 and #25 all slide-up a slot, and Destrehan (LA) moves into the poll at #25.
Maybe Joliet Catholic's 13th state title last year WAS unlucky. The Hilltoppers' 2008 season came to a close Saturday with a 24-21 overtime loss to Providence in a battle of two of Illinois best high school football program. The Celtics win moves Providence to next week's quarterfinal round. Joliet Catholic was able to force overtime after battling back from a 14-0 halftime deficit. Click here for game story.

By Jeff Fisher The High School Football Huddle Aurora Christian quarterback Jordan Roberts now owns another Illinois passing record. Roberts, who earlier this year took over as the state's all-time touchdown thrower, is now the state's leader in passing yardage. Friday night Roberts broke the record of 8,308 yards set last year by Rochester's Wil Lunt. Aurora Christian beat Wheaton Academy 34-19.
Elsewhere, the David vs. Goliath Battle between 8A St. Rita and 1A Hope Academy went to Goliath as St. Rita improved to 8-1 with a 49-0 shutout. It was the first time in Illinois history that two teams from the state's biggest and smallest classification had ever met on the gridiron.

It's never happened before in Illinois high school football history...a 1A school going up the ladder to face an 8A school. However, it will happen Friday night when 8A St. Rita, a school that began the year in national rankings, faces 1A Hope Academy. St. Rita brings a 7-1 record into the contest, while Hope is a perfect 8-0. To see how this one turns out, don't forget to come back to The High School Football Huddle tonight for our scoreboard.
By Jeff Fisher The High School Football Huddle Maine South, the top-ranked 8A team in Illinois, came back from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Glenbrook North Friday night 30-27. The Hawks won it on a field goal with five seconds to play.
