Carmel & Marian Catholic Combine For 128 Points

How would you like to have your team score 55 points and lose? Well that's what happened last Friday when Carmel beat Marian Catholic 73-55. It was the third most points scored in an Illinois high school football game since 1944.

How wacky was this one? Well in one first half sequence Carmel scored five touchdowns, but only ran three offensive plays.

For a look back at the high scoring affair, please click on our headline "Carmel & Marian Catholic Combine For 128 Points".

Illinois Associated Press High School Football Rankings

From The Associated Press

There were no changes among No. 1 teams in The Associated Press high school football rankings for the first time this season.

Aledo, No. 1 in Class 1A, won 55-0 over previously undefeated Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon in a West Prairie Trail West Conference game.

Mount Olive stayed unbeaten and climbed to No. 2 after a 45-7 win over Riverton. Previous No. 2 Lexington fell to No. 9 after a 20-18 loss to Fisher in the Heart of Illinois Conference.

In 2A, Maroa-Forsyth solidified its No. 1 ranking with a 34-14 victory in the Okaw Valley over Decatur St. Teresa, which hadn't allowed a point in its first two wins. Newcomers to the 2A ranks this week are Minonk Fieldcrest, which has three shutout victories, and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.

Defending 3A state champion Bureau Valley stayed atop that class after a 47-7 victory over Peru St. Bede in the Big Rivers.

Plano improved one position to No. 2 after a 14-7 win over Reed-Custer. Previous No. 2 DuQuoin fell to No. 9 after an overtime loss to Herrin.

Driscoll remained No. 1 in 4A after a 57-12 Suburban Catholic win over St. Edward. New to the 4A ranks this week are Byron at No. 8, Mendota at No. 9 and Breese Mater Dei at No. 10.

In 5A, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin stayed No. 1 after a 33-7 win over Jacksonville in the Central State Eight. Metamora remained No. 2 and Geneseo No. 3 after each posted narrow victories.

Mt. Carmel Top Joliet Catholic In Battle Of Chicago Powers

When it comes to football in Illinois, Joliet Catholic and Mt. Carmel are the cream of the crop. Between them they own 22 state championships; 12 for Joliet Catholic, 10 for Mt. Carmel.

Saturday the two powerhouses kicked off the 2006 season at Solidier Field in the 2nd Annual Chicago High School Football Kickoff Classic. One game into the season, it's Mt. Carmel that has the bragging rights after a 13-6 win.

Mt. Carmel quarterback Carter Kopatch was the star of the comeback win throwing two fourth quarter touchdown passes. Kopatch was 13-of-21 for 252 yards.

Also Enjoy some of the pictures I took at Soldier Field.

Illinois Champs Try To Defend Titles

Driscoll won its fifth straight 4A Illinois state high school football champ last year, but the road to a record sixth straight could be long and hard.

Driscoll lost 32 seniors from last year's squad, but does return three-year starting quarterback Phil Pedi. How good will this year's team be? That question should be answered tonight when they play last season's 5A runner-up Rock Island Alleman.

Wheaton Warrenville South running back Dan Dierking can now concentrate on his senior season. The 5-10, 190-pound second-team All-Stater has made a verbal commitment to Purdue. In his junior season, Dierking, who's dad also went to Purdue and then had a ten-year career in the NFL, rushed for over 2,200 yards and 38-touchdowns.

Providence Catholic Head Coach Matt Senffner Retires

One of the best high school football coaches in the country is taking off the headset. After 38-years Providence Catholic Head Coach Matt Senffner is stepping down at the end of the current school year.

It certainly will be a little strange next year not seeing Senffner on the sideline, since he's the only head coach the Celtics have ever had. Senffner, who will also step down as the school's athletic director, started the school's football program in 1968. After a slow start (1-6, 0-7, 1-8 in the first three seasons), he built the Celtics into a state powerhouse.

Providence won its first of nine state titles in 1987 and then really turned things on in the 90s. From 1994-97 the Celtics won 50 consecutive games and four straight state crowns.

Senffner compiled a 300-114-1 record in 38 seasons, and retires as Illinois' all-time winningest head coach. His 2005 team went 5-5 and lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Welcome to the Illinois High School Football Huddle

Hi everyone, my name is Jeff Fisher.

I'm a former TV Sports anchor at Fox Sports Net in Chicago. I've also worked in Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Growing up in eastern Pennsylvania I was raised on all that is good when it comes to high school football. When I began my broadcasting career at the age of fourteen, I focused on high school athletics, and this blog is the next step in my career.

First and foremost, this blog is designed to promote the great sport of high school football. This blog is an outgrowth of my original one called The High School Huddle. I'm going to have 50 of these so fans in each state can get the most up-to-date info on what's going on in the sport.

Please feel free to post your thoughts and let us know what you think Illinois high school football fans need to know about.
