ESPN2 Descends on Wheaton Warrenville South-Glenbard West Game

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

For the second year in a row, ESPN's cameras are positioned around Red Grange Field at Wheaton Warrenville South High School to show the nation a top-notch Illinois high school football game.

In about 15 minutes, the national spotlight will shine on the Tigers' game against Glenbard West. It's all a part of ESPN's 2011 High School Football Kickoff television package of 13 football games in three-days that began Friday night.

This should be a good one with two-time defending champ WWS riding a 26-game win streak that includes a 40-20 over the Hilltoppers in last year's Class 7A quarterfinals.  WWS also beat Glenbard West 31-24 in double-overtime for the 7A title.

Wheaton Warrenville South leads the series rivalry, which dates back to 1916, with 31 wins to 25 wins for Glenbard West. There have been nine ties.

This will be the first time since 2006 that the two have played during the regular season. The rivalry has been put on-hold several times over the last century because of dominance by one of the teams. The current suspension occured because of WWS dominance.

This one has an interesting storyline surrounding the two starting quarterbacks.

Justice Odom is GW's starting QB was the start on WWS' freshman and sophmore teams in 2008 and 2009 before transferring last year to the Hilltoppers. The Tigers' starting quarterback is Thaddeus Armstrong, who transferred-in to WWS from Ottawa High School.

Armstong has the task of filling the shoes of Reilly O'Toole, who is now at the University of Illinois.

Last year, WWS pounded defending 8A champ Maine South 44-7 during a nationally-televised game on ESPN.

Illinois Continues to Test for Performance-Enhancing Drugs for High School Athletes

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

Courtesy: www.ihsa.org
High school football practice begins tomorrow in Illinois, and with it comes news that the Illinois High School Association will continue to test its athletes for performance-enchancing drugs.

During the 2010-11 school year, the IHSA tested 747 student-athletes with four positive tests.  Two of the four athletes were cleared by a medical review officer.  The other athletes were the first two punishable tests since the testing program began during the 2008-09 school year.  Over the first three-years, 1,758 tests were administered.

“Some people will look at the number of positive test results and conclude that the testing is not working,” said Marty Hickman, IHSA Executive Director.  “But, it is important to maintain perspective. The scope of our testing was never going to be large enough to catch every student who may be using performance-enhancing drugs. The program was put into place to be a deterrent to help prevent students from using these harmful drugs and we believe it is successfully serving that purpose.”

Illinois became the fourth state to test its athletes for PEDs.

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

Football practice across the state begins August 10th, but legendary coach Jim Unruh will not be on the Illini West sideline.

Unruh resigned last week after an incredible career that saw him win six state titles between Illini West and Carthage High Schools.  His overall record in 25-years as head coach at the school was 256-45.

Unruh goes out on a high, with his team having won last year's 3A title, plus he won 40 of his last 41 games.

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

The Lake Forester is reporting today that Libertyville head football coach Randy Kuceyeski is heading into his final season on the sidelines with more than his usual set of goals.

The publication is reporting that Kuceyeski, who is entering his 18th season with the Wildcats, has been diagnosed with cancer.  Kuceyeski tells the newspaper that he plans to stay on the sidelines for his final season while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Here's hoping that Coach K gets a big W in his fight against one of the toughest opponents of all!

Illinois High School Football Championships to Leave Champaign on Odd Years

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

Big 10 expansion is causing Illinois High School Association officials to find a site for the state playoffs in odd numbered years.

Since 1999 the state title games have been played at the University of Illinois in Champaign over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  However, with the addition of Nebraska to the conference the Big 10 will play conference games over that same weekend beginning in 2013.  That means that during odd numbered years, Illinois will play a home game.

The IHSA says it will keep the championships in Champaign during even numbered years and look for another location for the odd years.

Ken Bublitz is trading one head coaching position at Plainfield South High School for another.

Bublitz, who is currently the head boys' basketball coach, has been named the school's head football coach. Bublitz, who takes over for Mike Briscoe who resigned at the end of last season, will carry double-duty next year.  That's because he won't resign as the basketball coach until the end of the 2011-12 season.

For the last six years,Bublitz has served as an assistant coach of the football team.

Last year, Plainfield South was 8-1.
