Galena Captured Illinos 1A Crown

All eyes may have been on Tuscola's Michigan-bound quarterback John Weinke going into the Illinois 1A championship game against Galena, but it didn't take long for Galena QB Gavin Kaiser to get some attention.

Kaiser amassed 362 yards in total offense as Galena won its third state title with a 35-7 win over the defending state champs.

Kaiser rushed for 93 yards on six carries, he was 10-of-15 in the passing department for 145 yards and he also returned two kickoffs for 124-yards, including a 91-yard touchdown return that tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter.

Joliet Catholic Goes For Record 13th Illinois Title

After a two year absence from an IHSA championship game, Joliet Catholic (12-1) will go after an Illinois state record 13th high school football championship on Saturday when the Hilltoppers play Lemont (11-2) in the 6A championship game at the University of Illinois.

It should be a ground war with both teams having excellent rushing attacks with five runners over the 1,000 yard mark this year. Joliet Catholic features three running backs that have rush for 1,000 yards (Tyler Hudetz 1,561 yds., Brandon Geiss 1,233 yds. and Connor Krisch 1,011 yds.). Lemont leading rusher is Bobby Earnest who's run for 1,771 yards and 27 touchdowns. Quarterback Brett Nagel has rushed for 1,443 yards and 21 scores.

Joliet has one twelve straight since losing its opener to arch-rival Mount Carmel. The Hilltoppers have averaged 46 points a game and 476 yards in total offense per game. Lemont, which is making its first championship game appearance, is averaging 37 points a game and 313 yards per game rushing.

Mt. Carmel Escapes Thriller With Loyola

For the second straight week, Mt. Carmel survived a big scare. Last week, the Caravan needed a field goal to get by De La Salle, this week, it needed two overtimes to beat Loyola Academy 31-24.

This one saw the two teams battle to a scoreless draw in the first half. Then Mt. Carmel (7-0) took a 17-0 lead into the fourth quarter. That's when Loyola (5-2) quarterback Peter Badovinac rallied the troops with two touchdown passes to send the game into overtime.

Mt. Carmel won in in the second overtime on a 10-yard run by Edwin Williams, who rushed for 189-yards and two touchdowns on the day on just 18-carries. The Caravan defense then shutdown Badovinac during Loyola's second overtime possession...sacking him once and watching three passes fall incomplete.

Badovinac finished 28 of 48 passing for 308 yards.

Richards Head Coach Becomes Winningest Coach in Illinois

Richards High School (Oak Lawn, IL) head coach Gary Korhonen has always been considered one of the best coaches, who has built one of the best programs in Illinois, but now he can be called the state's all-time winningest head coach.

Korhonen's squad beat Evergreen Park 44-0 over the weekend giving the 67-year head coach his 301st win all-time, which moved him past former Providence head coach Matt Senffner, who retired with 300 victories. The victory also clinched Richards' (6-0) 23-straight playoff appearance.

Actually Korhonen now has 310 career victories, if you count the nine wins he had while coaching in Iowa before taking the reigns at Richards.

The High School Football Huddle salutes Coach Korhonen and all of his players that helped him achieve this milestone.

Mt. Carmel Tops #24 St. Rita To Win Battle of Chicago

Gately Stadium in Chicago was rocking Friday night as two of the top teams in the state collided for not only Windy City bragging rights, but also state and national bragging rights. In the end it was Mt. Carmel doing the bragging after beating St. Rita, which was ranked #24 by USA Today, 35-19 before a sellout crowd at Gately.

St. Rita won the Illinois 7A championship in 2006, while Mt. Carmel was runner-up the state's largest class (8A).

To read about how the Caravan took down St. Rita, please click on our headline "Mt. Carmel Tops #24 St Rita To Win Battle of Chicago" for a story from the Chicago Tribune.
