Illinois High School Football Scores - 1st Round Playoffs

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

The Illinois high school football playoffs opened Friday night with plenty of rain in the Chicagoland-area and two #1 seeds making an early exit from the postseason.

In 7A, Marian Catholic, which went 1-8 last year, took down #1 Bogan 49-6. Bogan hadn't been to the postseason since 1996 and was a perfect 9-0 coming-in. In 5A, Wheaton Academy beat top-seeded Hillcrest 20-19 in overtime.

In addition, one #2 (Rockford Christian) seed fell, along with two (Princeville & Mt. Zion) #3's and two (Taft & Lincoln-Way Central) #4's.

First round action will wrap-up today. For the full schedule of Saturday games, go to the bottom of this story.

No More Football Conferences in Illinois?

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Eureka High School principal Rich Wherley is suggesting that Illinois do away with football conferences. Wherley made the suggestion in an IHSA by-law amend proposal. Wherley believes that conferences should be eliminated and the regular season based on geography and school size.

Flu Could Decide Illinois Conference Championship

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

St. Charles East, which leads the Upstate Eight Conference heading into the final week of the regular, season could be forced to share its league title if a remedy can't be found for the flu, which has caused school officials to cancel classes through the end of the week.

According to the Chicago Tribune, with 900 of the school's 2,200 students missing class on Tuesday, classes have been cancelled for the rest of the week. That puts Friday's game against rival St. Charles North in jeopardy. If the game can't be moved to Saturday, hat East would have to forfeit the game.

Right now East leads the Upstate Eight by one game over Lake Park. If East has to forfeit and Lake Park beats Barlett, both team would end-up with 6-1 league records. Of course, a forfeight loss would also affect the team's post-season seeding. Both East and North have qualified for the IHSA playoffs.

Maine South Looks to Extend Conference Win Streak to 44 Against Tough Foe

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Maine South's 43-game Central South Suburban Conference win streak will be tested Saturday when the Hawks take-on once beaten Glenbrook South. The Chicago Tribune reports that if any team can stop the streak, it's Glenbrook South, which has made a habit of putting a scare in the nationally-ranked Hawks.

North Chicago Football Program Suspended After Fight

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

North Chicago will not be playing its scheduled game with Vernon Hills tomorrow night. Today, the Illinois High School Athletic Association suspended all levels of the football program because of a fight that broke-out in last Friday's game against Simeon.

The game was called after just seven minutes and Simeon leading 21-0; Simeon was declared the winner.

According to a news release on the IHSA website, the North Chicago teams will be allowed to continue to practice, but will forfeit tomorrow night's Vernon Hills game. North Chicago administration officials will meet with the IHSA next week to discuss the remainder of the 2009 season.

“There is no place in high school athletics for the actions that occurred at the football contest between North Chicago and Simeon,” said Marty Hickman, Executive Director of the Illinois High School Athletic Association “Sportsmanship is at the forefront of the IHSA’s mission and this is a very serious incident that necessitated serious consequences.”

“Hopefully, this troubling incident will serve as a teachable moment for both of these schools, as well as all the other student-athletes, coaches and fans who enjoy high school athletics in Illinois,” added Hickman. “We can’t change what took place last week, but those who enjoy the privilege of participating in interscholastic activities must understand they are obligated to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the ideals of good sportsmanship.”

Simeon will be allowed to continue its season, however, several players involved in the incident will be disciplined, according to the news release.

North Chicago is coached by former Chicago Bear Glen Kozlowski.

Labor Day is a Day to Celebrate Those Who Toil for the Good of Society

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Happy Labor Day everyone!

For those of you who don't know, the first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City by the Knights of Labor. Congress made it a national holiday in 1894.

The holiday itself is devoted to the recognition of working people's contributions to society. So with that in mind, I share a great story from the Chicago Tribune today about Proviso East High School's head football coach Aaron Peppers, who's full-time job is a police officer in Maywood.

Peppers should be saluted on this Labor Day for trying to make a difference in a community that has its share of struggles.

So Where Did All of the Driscoll Players Go?

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

As the regular season opens in Illinois today, one team that is absent from the high school football landscape is Driscoll Catholic, which at the end of the 2008-09 school year closed due to a lack of enrollment.

Today, the Chicago Tribune takes a look at what happened to all of the players from the program that won seven straight state titles from 2001 to 2007.

Today, I spoke with a friend, who's a former player at Driscoll, who tells me that Immaculate Conception is the big winner in transfers. His thought is because Driscoll was a 4A school, all of the transfers to IC will make the 2008 state champs from Elmhurst one of the best 2A teams around.

Although according to the Tribune report, the steal in the transfer sweepstakes was quarterback Nick Campanella, who chose arch-rival Montini.

Driscoll Catholic (IL) Going Deep...Into Pockets

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Driscoll Catholic High School (Addison, IL) supporters are leaving it all on the field as they continue to rally to save the Chicagoland high school football power.

Save Driscoll organizers will meet with the De La Salle Christian Brothers of the Midwest today in suburban Chicago to try to convince officials to keep the school open. The Christian Brothers announced April 2nd that the school would close its doors at the end of the year because of declining enrollment that is causing economic problems for the school that won seven Illinois high school football championships between 2001 and 2007.

Since the announcement earlier this month, Save Driscoll organizers say they have raised over $850,000 to keep the school open.

Chicago High School Football Power Closes Its Doors

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

If the economy can take down financial stalwarts Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, it should come as no surprise that Chicagoland football power Driscoll Catholic (Addison, IL) is closing its doors. The reason for the closing? A drop in enrollment.

2008 was the first season in eight years that the Highlanders, who won seven straight 4A championships between 2001 and 2007, didn't play for for a state title this decade.
